Richland School District is in the process of examining its budget in light of expected funding cuts coming soon from Olympia. At Tuesday’s school board meeting, it was the athletic department’s turn to present possible places where they can trim spending. Here’s what was shared with the board:

Richland School District Athletics Budget Analysis

• Implement one-way transportation to local contests – savings $22,500
• Eliminate non-league travel over 175 miles – savings $7,000
• Eliminate coaches’ professional development – savings $8,000
• Eliminate middle school athletic director position – savings $16,750
• Limit the number of middle school B teams – savings $30,000
• Limit high school basketball to four teams – savings $8,750
• Eliminate middle school B teams – savings $55,600
• General reduction in numbers of teams/coaches – savings $82,200

Totaled up, that’s more than $200,000 in savings … along with what looks a lot fewer sports opportunities for students.

This is just in the discussion phase right now — none of this has been decided on. The board is just looking at possibilities while waiting for final word on the state budget. Other departments will present similar savings plans at future RSD board meetings.
