Richland’s Long-Range City Plan: 7 Focus Areas
by Matt McGee on August 27th, 2008. Filed under: Richland News.
The City of Richland shared its plans this week for managing growth over the next 20 years. The Herald says that only about two dozen residents showed up to hear about it, though. Lack of interest? Lack of advertising the town hall meeting? Either way, this stuff matters.
City leaders presented seven “key focus areas,” and for each one, they offered five-year goals. Here are the seven focus areas:
- Financial Stability and Operational Effectiveness
- Infrastructure and Facilities
- Economic Vitality
- Central Richland and Island View Revitilzation
- Natural Resources Management
- Community Amenities
- Housing and Neighborhoods
If you read through the five-year goals, you’ll see things like “acquire property for new infrastructure and facilities” … “grow retail and commercial tax base” … “focus on creating Urban Villages” … and “encourage development of walkable neighborhoods.”
At the town hall, city officials reportedly said they expect population to almost double between now and the year 2030 (from 46,000 to 77,000 people). Wow. That might be a bit ambitious/optimistic, no?
All of this is available in greater detail on the city’s web site.
