Richland School District Considering Budget Cuts

RSD logoIt’s still just in discussion, but the Richland School Board is floating several ideas to deal with what they expect will be substantial cuts in state education funding. At their regular meeting this week, the Board discussed these ideas:

1.) Athletics Transportation
Rather than offering two-way transportation for athletic events, offering only one-way transport for middle school and sub-varsity high school events would save the district approximately $22,500.

2.) Middle School Athletics
This would limit middle schools to having one “A” and one “B” team per sport. In high-participation sports, they’d allow split-squad “B” teams. The district would save a total of $39,000 — $24,000 on coaching stipends and about $15,000 on transportation.

3.) Extended Day Kindergarten/Pre-School
These programs at each elementary school are currently funded by state I-728 funds, to the tune of about $392,000. The District expects to know more about that funding in the next couple weeks, as well as how federal stimulus money might be used to replace any I-728 funding cuts.

Again, these are just ideas on the table at this point. But it’s worth keeping track of what the district is thinking about in these difficult economic times.
