Richland pockets extra $168k from new sales tax law

The City of Richland says it received $168,751 in its first payment under a new state law that changes how retail sales taxes are distributed. Passed last year, Substitute Senate Bill 5089 redirects the sales tax on some purchases from one city to another. As the city explains:

“…if a Richland resident buys furniture from a Spokane store and the product is delivered to Richland, the city’s share of the sales tax comes to the City of Richland. Historically, the City of Spokane would have received the sales tax.”

Not all purchases are covered, but $168k is a nice chunk of change from Richland folks shopping outside of Richland.
