There’s been a lot of coverage in the local paper and TV news about the possibility of at least three Richland city parks closing down soon: Westwood, Barth and Greater Years parks. The city says the parks aren’t used very much and cost about $10,000 to maintain. Richland residents say the parks are used more than the city thinks and that they should stay open.

Richland Parks and Recreation Commission

The commission’s next meeting is August 14 at 7 pm in the city council chambers. There’s a Public Comment period on the agenda, and anyone wanting to argue in favor of keeping the parks should do it then. The Parks & Rec commission will be the ones to make a recommendation to the city council about what to do.

“Talk Back Richland” TV Program

The parks situation will be the topic of discussion on “Talk Back Richland,” which will air on City View TV on August 20. It’ll be a live cablecast from the city council chambers, and you can attend in person or watch on TV. If you stay home, there will be viewer call-in opportunities to get your voice heard. Mayor John Fox, Parks & Recreation Commissioner John Butterfield and Parks & Recreation Director Doug Strong will be on the program.
