Richland: Are You Ready for Curbside Recycling?

In an effort to keep the Richland landfill from overflowing in the next five years, the city is considering instituting a curb-side recycling program. That’s bound to upset a good portion of the community, but if there’s a silver lining, it’s this: You probably wouldn’t need to separate your own recyclables into separate containers (like they do in Seattle and elsewhere).
City officials recently told KEPR-TV that a recycling program would “almost double the landfill’s remaining life.” And they said residents would be able to put all their recyclables — whether paper, glass, plastic, or whatever — into a single container.
Mind you, this plan is still in the early stages, and I suspect when local governments float ideas like this, it’s partly in the hopes that they’ll get some public feedback.
My feedback? It’s probably the right thing to do in this day and age, and as long as it’s not as burdensome as the recycling program in Seattle (I used to live part-time over there), it should be doable.
