Richland applying for Google’s fiber-optic network experiment
The City of Richland wants Google to come to town and install an experimental fiber optic network — one that Google says “will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections.” It’s part of a program that Google announced about six weeks ago called Google Fiber for Communities.
Google will only choose a “small number” of communities across the country, and there’s a ton of interest in this, prompting Richland’s Economic Development Manager Gary Ballew to tell me via email, “I’m not holding out hope.” Some cities are going to extremes to get Google’s attention — Topeka has changed its name to Google, Kansas, for the entire month of March!
You Can Help, But You Only Have One Day
Ballew tells me that TRIDEC has already filled out the citizen nomination form, and you can do that, too — but you have to act fast. Google is only accepting nominations until tomorrow, March 26. Use this link:

and click on Nominate Your Community. You’ll be asked some questions about your current Internet access plans and costs.
