We drove by Hastings Book on GW Way this afternoon and I wondered if maybe someone was already in line for Sarah Palin’s book signing tomorrow. Sure enough, not just someone — but about 10-15 people! This shot was taken at about 2:00 pm, almost 24 hours before the book signing was due to start.

Can you imagine that?? I wonder if the police will let them stay there overnight? That’s not allowed in some places.

Cari and I also got a kick out of the sign on the Round Table Pizza that’s right next door to hastings:

It’d be pretty cool if she takes them up on the offer tomorrow.

Update: The Sarah Palin book signing is scheduled for 12-2 pm on Sunday, November 29th (not Nov. 30th as first reported). It’ll happen at Hastings in Richland.

You’ve probably heard by now that Sarah Palin, the former Vice-Presidential candidate and ex-Governor of Alaska, is planning to spend her Thanksgiving holiday here in the Tri-Cities with relatives. I think she dropped that bit of info during her recent appearance on Oprah.

And now, the TC Herald is saying on Twitter that she’s also planning a book signing in Richland while she’s in town:

Wonder if this means national media are gonna invade Richland, too? Imagine the spectacle. We’ll pass along any new details as we hear them. It’s gotta be at Hastings, doesn’t it? Would the Bookworm host an event as potentially huge as this? Hmmmm…

Richland Library is hopping!

Curious to know how things are going at the Richland Library since it reopened back in mid-July? Wonder no more, because the city says the joint is jumping.

Earlier this week, the city announced that the library has had 110,417 visits since the grand reopening in July — a 10.9% increase over the same time period last year.

“The total does not include the number of people who have used just the lobby space or shopped at the Friends Book Sale Room and did not enter the library through the security gates.”

Great to see local folks taking advantage of a great local resource, isn’t it?

I think we’ve also blogged before about the ongoing surveys that Richland and Kennewick have been using to get public input on the future of Columbia Park West — and now there’s another survey available.

It’s a six-question survey about the three alternatives that are currently on the table for Columbia Park West.

Another Town Hall Meeting This Week

Do you happen to remember this post from early October about the then-upcoming City of Richland town hall meeting? There’s another one coming this week — it’s at 7 pm on Thursday (Nov. 5) at the city shops on Duportail Street.

As a refresher, here’s what’s on the agenda:

City Council and staff will discuss the city’s Strategic Leadership Plan, capital project priorities and proposed 2010 budget. The meeting will include audience participation, an opportunity to visit with city council and staff, and refreshments. All ages are welcome. Richland CityView, cable channel 13, will televise the meeting live.

Another Town Hall Meeting This Week

Closure: GW Way and First Street

The city sent us a notice earlier today about the upcoming closure at the intersection of George Washington Way and First Street in Richland. And this is a whopper of a closure: It starts Thursday (October 1st) at 8:30 am and continues through November 6th.

Yes, November 6th.

The intersection will be closed round the clock, 24 hours a day. This is the first phase of the First Street project — it involves sewer installation and getting the intersection ready for a traffic light in the future.

The city will set up the following detours:

Northbound at Spengler Street, diverted to Stevens Drive
Southbound at Horn Rapids Road, diverted to Stevens Drive

I’ve made a handy map at right that shows what’s going on. Cuz that’s the kind of guy I am. You’ll thank me later…

Health Care Forum in Richland Next Week

Several state legislators are getting together next week for a health care forum in Richland. It’ll include State Senator Jerome Delvin, along with State Reps. Larry Haler, Brad Klippert, and Doug Ericksen. They’ll be talking about the state health care situation, which is no doubt related to what’s being discussed at the national level … but not the same.

RSD Wants Your Opinion on Superintendent Search

You probably know that the Richland School District is looking for a new superintendent following the resignation of Jean Lane. The district has hired a company called Northwest Leadership Associates to lead the superintendent search, and their first step is to get some community feedback via an online survey:

“Your responses to the questions in this survey will assist the Richland School District Board of Directors and Northwest Leadership Associates to develop the position description and leadership profile that will guide the selection of the next superintendent.”

It’s only about 10 questions or so and should take less than five minutes. Click here if you want to take the survey.

Pooch Plunge coming soon to Howard Amon Park

I’m not sure if our wonderful dog, Sparky, (right) would want to do this or not, but it sure sounds fun: On September 12 and 13, the Tri-City Dog Park Society is hosting a Pooch Plunge in the wading pool at Howard Amon Park. Yep, the pool is going to the dogs!

It runs from 10 am to 6 pm on both days, and the cost is $10 per family for up to two dogs. They’re gonna fence off an area of the park so the dogs can run around and get in the pool if they want. There’ll also be a yard sale of dog-related items. All proceeds will benefit the Dog Park Society — and they’re looking for volunteers to help run the event, as well as donations for the yard sale.

Roads Closed This Week in South Richland

That construction work in South Richland continues this week, and there are more road closures and nuisances to come — all in the vicinity of the Leslie/Gage/Keene intersections. Here’s the word from the city offices:

Keene Road

Keene Road from Elementary Street to Gage will be closed on Tuesday, August 25 beginning at 6 p.m. for partial closure and at 9 p.m. for full closure. Keene will partially open by 6 a.m. Wednesday, August 26.

Leslie Road

Leslie Road, from Gage north for several hundred yards will be closed from Wednesday, August 26 at 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Thursday, August 27.

Detours will be in place for all closures; all area businesses and offices will be accessible.
