I wasn’t sure what to expect this morning at the AT&T Store in Richland. Today’s the first day you could pre-order the new iPhone 4, and in some places you’d find people lining up overnight to be at the front of the line so their order would be placed as soon as possible.

I didn’t get to the store until about 9:30 am (it opened at 9 o’clock) and was pleasantly surprised that the line wasn’t too long:

Everyone was inside, but wrapped around the main counter in a semi-circle. People were chatting, generally in a good mood, and no one seemed too upset by the long wait to buy an iPhone 4. Well, I take that back: There were a couple people in line not to buy the new iPhone, but because they’re existing phone wasn’t working. Ouch! Sorry, folks, but you picked the wrong day to have phone problems.

The line wasn’t all that bad; I think I waited about 25-30 minutes before reaching the counter. Placed my order and called it a day. Now another wait begins: The new phone isn’t due to ship until late next week.

“The shield door is in a key area of the WTPs High-Level Waste Vitrification (HLW) Facility and was installed to extremely tight tolerances, down to five-thousandths of an inch, or less than the diameter of a human hair.”

… you just shake your head and think, Wow. A 50-ton door built and installed to that precision level. Just another day at Hanford, right?

We’re big fans of the dog park, so this is great news in the McGee household.

Volunteers are planning to gather at around 8 am Saturday morning to start work on installing a fence. This is part of the first phase of the permanent dog park, and it’ll involve about 2.5 acres of land. If you’d like to help out with this weekend’s work, here’s what the Tri-Cities Dog Park Society is looking for:

This is what we need April 24th at 9am (or 8am for the auger crew):

*Volunteers with wheel barrels, shovels, cordless drills, hammers, levels, string, etc.

*Portable power augers and people to run them. (The augers will need to be running by 8am so the volunteers can start setting the posts and building the fence and gates.)

*Bottled water and light lunches/snacks provided for volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering your time, equipment, or services here is what you need to do.
Contact TCDPS Vice President Jan Davis by 5pm on Wednesday April 21st.

I’d rather not post Jan’s phone number or email address on the blog, so contact Cari or me if you’d like more information and we’ll pass it along.

This will all be possible thanks to a $16,000 donation from the Dog Park Society, which the Richland City Council is expected to accept at tonight’s meeting.

Gone is UWTV and in its place is TVW — the Washington public affairs network that features live legislative sessions from Olympia, as well as a variety of government and public affairs programs about what’s happening in Washington.

You can check out the TVW web site to see what programs are on tap.

TVW just started showing on Channel 18 in Richland yesterday. UWTV used to be there, but the city says that “a lack of local interest in UWTV combined with requests for TVW led to the change in channel designation.”

Okay, believe it or not, after almost 15 years of living in the Tri-Cities, I’ve finally visited the CREHST Museum in Richland. Yep, first time. We took an out-of-town guest there over the Thanksgiving weekend. Cari and the kids have been there before (several times, I think), but I never joined them.

My reaction: Love it! It’s weird — the museum is smaller than I expected, but also better than I expected.

The main level has a tour of historical Richland that you can do yourself, or go along with a guide. We did the self-tour thing, stopping at the various displays and listening to the pre-recorded audio that accompanies some of them. The focus isn’t all on Hanford, but that’s a good portion of the tour (as you’d expect). My favorite display was this one of a bunch of old Hanford signs found in a pit north of the 200 area weather station:

Also on the main level is a science exhibit that had some pretty cool hands-on things. It’s from the Mobius Science Center that will open in Spokane in 2011. There’s also a bookstore on the main level.

Downstairs there are some more displays (ABC Homes, Fish of the Columbia River, etc.) and a big room where you can watch videos related to Richland, Hanford, the Columbia Basin, etc.

We were there for about an hour, I think, maybe a little longer. It’s only $4 for adults and $3 for students, so you really can’t go wrong. Highly recommend it, especially if you’ve never visited before. CREHST is located at 95 Lee Boulevard.

In addition to the photo above, I’ve uploaded a dozen more in this Flickr photoset: CREHST Museum, Richland, WA.

Hmmmm…I’m not even a huge nature lover (I’m still burned about the government making us use the new light bulbs, I hate those, as good as they are for the planet), but I could really get behind this plan. Be sure to watch the accompanying video.

Wonder no more, because the city says the joint is jumping.

Earlier this week, the city announced that the library has had 110,417 visits since the grand reopening in July — a 10.9% increase over the same time period last year.

“The total does not include the number of people who have used just the lobby space or shopped at the Friends Book Sale Room and did not enter the library through the security gates.”

Great to see local folks taking advantage of a great local resource, isn’t it?
