Buying a Home in Richland?
In order to be eligible, you need to meet certain income guidelines, be a first time hombuyer (as the city defines a first-timer), provide some money toward the purchase of the home, take a class about homeownership, and it needs to be your primary residence, not an investment property.
The city offers grants, or deferred-repayment plans, or no-interest loans. But hurry – when the money runs out for the year, it’s out for the year. Plus, they have the option to discontinue the program at any time, or change the rules. So, it’s all on a first-come, first-serve basis.
I think it’s natural to wonder “why?” Why would the city set aside money to help people buy homes? Because homeowners care about their community. If you own something, the theory goes, you maintain it, and care for it, and don’t engage in behaviors that lessen the value of your home and your neighborhood. In addition, you encourage others to do the same. Therefore, your city has more people invested in making your city great. That’s a win-win situation.
