“A theme park next to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant”

by Matt McGee on August 14th, 2008. Filed under: Richland News.

That’s how the Los Angeles Times explains the growing tourism coming to Richland because of Hanford and the Hanford Reach National Monument. I know many Richlanders won’t like the comparison, but I’m a sucker for clever analogies, even if they are a bit suspect.

On the tourism/visitor front, the article talks about those uber-popular DOE tours of the B reactor, and what might happen if the B reactor becomes a National Historic Landmark:

Even though the agency has increased the number of tours from 18 last year to 48 this year to meet the demand, all those for the rest of 2008 have been filled. If the National Park Service takes over the tours, they would be expanded significantly.

The article won’t be of much interest to many longtime Richland folks, but if you’re semi-new to the area, it’s a good read and educational, too.
