3 Richland parks survive

The long-running battle over the future of three small Richland parks appears to be over, and it seems the parks — and their supporters — have won. The city’s Parks & Recreation Commission voted Thursday night to keep Barth, Greater Years, and Westwood parks open.
Richland Parks on the Chopping Block was our initial coverage of this story from last August, when the city wanted to declare the three parks as surplus and save on the $10,000 annual maintenance costs. Then, in October, we reported Richland Parks Safe for 2009?, which showed no funding cuts for park maintenance in 2009 — an indicator that the city planned to maintain the parks.
The commission’s vote doesn’t fully close the door on this issue; they have to forward a recommendation to the city council for a final decision. But you can imagine the outcry if the council ignores the commission’s recommendation….
